snaq.net
snaq.net is a website showcasing the photography of Giles Winstanley, predominantly of the underwater world. The primary motivation for taking photos in the marine environment is to capture the natural beauty of this diverse realm, but as the world's oceans are increasingly at risk due to the impacts of society, these photos also aim to increase awareness of the need to conserve an environment which is essential to our lives.

If you are interested in purchasing prints of any of the photos shown on this website, please visit the separate online sales site to see if they are already available. If not please send an email to see if I can fulfil your request.

Image Gallery

As both a SCUBA diving instructor and underwater photographer I have visited some of the most beautiful regions of the world. Currently I am a resident of Townsville in far Northern Queensland I have frequent opportunities to dive on the varied reefs comprising the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef system, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a small showcase of some of the images I have captured, both above and below the water.

Shark Conservation

Bite-Back is a unique organisation in the UK dedicated to the protection of sharks by reducing consumer demand for meat and fins. Working constructively with both suppliers and retailers to remove threatened species from menus and fish counters, it aims to effectively lower the global trade in such species. Many of those for sale fulfill significant biological roles in their normal ecosystems, and fishing at unsustainable rates can lead to potentially serious problems for the ecosystems which are still not fully understood.

By striving to prevent over-use of threatened species we all stand a better chance of maintaining our world in a state of balance between the resources we require and the decline of those we harvest. Take a look at the Bite-Back website to see how you can make a positive difference, in a surprisingly simple and effective way.

DBPool - Database connection pooling for Java

In addition to photography I also do software development, mainly in the Java language. DBPool is a database connection pooling library for Java which allows quicker access to database connections in high-intensity applications such as servlet-based dynamic websites, or database-intense client-side applications.
